By Lara Lopez After you've done some initial shopping, your first task is to sign up for some trial memberships so you can evaluate what the dating sites have to offer. And the tour of the site makes it seem trouble free to sign up and find someone. Like other aspects of the online dating process, however, this is less simple than it appears. First, you have to understand the differences between the two types of dating service trial runs for which you can sign up: trial memberships and free memberships. Trial memberships Trial memberships give you full access to most (but perhaps not all) of a site's email, chat, and instant messaging features for a fixed amount of time typically, 5 to 10 days. During that period, you'll be able to respond to email and chat inquiries that members leave for you after you create your own profile and put it online. You may be able to initiate email with people who interest you, although the level of functionality varies from site to site; and, you may be able to respond only during the trial period and not approach people directly. Some sites require that you submit a credit card number in order to sign up for the free trial (HispanicInternetDating does not by the way); you will be notified by email when your free time is about to expire. If you don't submit an official notice of cancellation, your credit card account will be charged automatically. Free memberships Most dating sites willow you to become a member and post a profile online for free. You can browse and search indefinitely, with no obligation to become a subscriber. Your ability to create a profile should not be limited; you should be able to create a full profile and respond to all the questions included in the form, rather than a partial profile. Free memberships are called memberships because they require that you create a screen name and password, and then submit some information to the site. Your ability to move beyond browsing and viewing other member profiles is limited, however. For example, you usually do not have the ability to send or receive email or instant messages with other members. About: www.hispanicinternetdating.com is a hispanic dating website. It's free to register on with no credit card details. Russian Romance Tours - A Wonderful Way To Meet Many Ladies At The Same Time
By Peter Finch A Russian romance tour is a fantastic way to meet hundreds of singles face to face, who are there for one thing: to find husbands. Unlike brides by mail order, Russian romance tours practice is not offensive for local women. They know that you have come all the way to their native country to meet the sweetheart of your life and start a relationship built not on dubious email offers but on real opinion and good impressions. Many girls prefer this because in this case they have direct contact with men and can ask questions and rate them in real time. The rules are simple: you have bigger choice and meet dozens of girls in one short vacation and they have the comfort of staying at home and see you in real life. Russian romance tours are often initiated by matchmaking agencies and prices depend on the length of your stay. There are regions where hotel accommodation is very expensive and others where the bed will cost you as much as a modest dinner in a western restaurant. Usually more than the half of the price is going for your airplane ticket to Russia but distance is big and this is inevitable. I have met and spoken to many men asking them are these tours any good? Opinions vary but basically they were built on the expectations my friends had before reaching Russia. Those who booked the tour just for the thrill, later said that they were surprised how many single women are in Russia and how sweet, cute, smart and lovely they are. Others who were relying on the tour believing that the love would immediately envelop them were disappointed indeed. In other words, such tours do not offer guarantees of lifetime romance. But that's life anyway. How actually does all this work? Men book their Russian romance tour in the matchmaking agency. They arrive at the hotel in Russia and dating starts from dinner. The local office of the agency arranges everything. They give badges to all the participants and this creates an ambient and friendly mood around you. Russian names are unusual and very soon you will love the idea of seeing name-labels everywhere. In meetings like this the proportion between male and female participants is one to ten. However you are there on a mission for love and you are welcome to walk around and personally get acquainted with everyone. You are free to exchange telephone numbers, mail addresses and any contact information that will help you keep in touch after you leave Russia. It is good to have a small list of things that you consider important in a relationship and want to know about your future bride. This is important because the time is limited and there are just so many nice women - you will be spoilt for choice. Things that in a normal situation would take you hours here happen way faster. At the end you have met so many pretty girls that your mind will be in overdrive. Don't forget that looks eventually fade and hard as it is, try and focus on personality - that endures time. The idea is to move fast, filter your dating prospects and be only with those who are meeting your interests and needs. Do not lose hope. Love comes unexpectedly and maybe next spring you will fly back to Russia with your hot Russian bride sitting next to you, maybe waiting for you when you land! Don't get scammed. Attract More Business By Making Things Easier
By Caterina Rando Any business that does not give customers VIP service will be out of
business before they realize it. One of my clients went to buy a new car
from a local dealer she knew personally through the business
community. She called ahead to explain what she wanted but, when she
got there he kept her waiting. He did not have the make she requested,
and suggested she check back with him tomorrow. She did, and did
again the following day, and the day after that. Three days later he told
her he could get the model she wanted in six weeks, but only if she
chose a different color. She contacted another dealership. Within an
hour, they had located the car she wanted in the color she wanted. They
even offered to pick it up for her and they offered her a better price, with
better financing, with a friendly customer service attitude and the
efficiency she was looking for. The second car dealership got her business because it was responsive
to her needs, the staff treated her with respect, and made her priority
their priority. Customers today expect a quick response, personal
accommodation for their particular situation, and a little something extra
in appreciation for their business. In essence they want youto make
their life easier. Are you doing that for your clients? Look at your business. Here are
some ideas to attract more business with less effort, by making things
easier for your clients and prospective clients. Be Persistent
Surprising to many, most business people appreciate persistence. It
shows them that their potential business is important to you and gives
them the sense that you will respond quickly to their needs. Do It For Them
Always ask your clients what you can do for them. Doing more than is
expected makes their life easier. Use the phone, the fax, and email as
often as possible. Go to their office to make appointments more
convenient for them. Offer to call and order lunch. If they tell you they
are swamped, have everything picked up and delivered. Make them, not
just their business, your priority. Use Urgency to Your Advantage
When someone tells you they need something quickly, make them feel
good, don't make them feel guilty. Often, when people call with an
immediate need, they are made to feel that their request is an
inconvenience, that any help they might receive is a big favor and a
burden. The truth of today's marketplace is that everyone wants
everything yesterday. Keep and beat the time frames your clients
request to keep them coming back time after time, singing your praises. Discover Their Other Needs and Help Fill Them
One of the things my coaching and corporate clients appreciate is the
large network I have cultivated because I can draw resources to fill all
their needs. I have made referrals for a graphic designer, an
accountant, a therapist, an image consultant, a computer programmer.
Find out what your clients need by asking simple questions that can
make a significant difference. "What else are you looking for right now?"
"What else do you need?" "Anything else I can help you with?" "What
else can I do to make your life easier?" Ask and you shall know the
answers. Share Innovative Information
Stay abreast of what is going on in the industries your clients care about.
Whenever you become aware of a new product, service, or an idea that
might make a difference for your clients, let them know. This tells them
you are thinking about them, and that you care and want to make their
life easier. To attract clients who want to give you business, create great word of
mouth. It is still the world's most valuable and most sought after
marketing tool. The easiest way to create great word of mouth for your
business is to make things easier for your clients. Amaze them so that
they tell everyone about you. Do these things and watch your business

The Three Rings of Relationships
By Annie Kaszina Glenna Trout is an international authority on face reading whose name I first registered in the context of Domestic Violence. (She contributed to The Kent Constabularys extraordinarily informative leaflet on Domestic Violence.) As her eyes read my face, she talked about the Three Rings. Briefly, all of our relationships fall somewhere within these three concentric rings. It was as she spoke of the Second Ring that Glenna placed a hand supportively on my shoulder. Glenna talked and I squirmed slightly in my seat, marvelling at how some more piece of the jigsaw had fallen into place I pass what she said on to you in the hope that it will be as enlightening for you as it was for me. The language and any shortcomings are mine. The Third Ring This is the outermost ring and it comprises the people with whom you have, quite literally, a nodding acquaintance. Your interaction with them may be pleasant enough. It comes about not by design, but simply because your paths cross. The Second Ring These people you meet and become familiar with in specific circumstance. You tend to become close quite quickly; you may share affinities that matter a lot at the time. These relationships are more closely connected to where you are in your life at the time than they are to who you truly are. Second Ring relationships include the kind of instant friendships you strike up on holiday, workplace friendships, as well as the new mothers together bond. They tend not to survive the specific circumstance in which they grew up for too long. Glenna points out how easy it is to confuse Second Ring romances with First Ring love. There will be a common interest or experience that throws two people together so that, at the start, they share something quite powerful. Rather than defining the nature of the bond, they are swayed by its force into believing in its quality and its durability. Two people who throw themselves into a Second Ring romance may well share a common hurt or problem, so that each has an unusual degree of awareness of what the other is feeling and a sense that the other is equally aware of what they are feeling. It would be quick and easy to say that this intimate knowledge of the other persons feeling is indicative of a high level of mutual understanding and empathy, but it would be wrong. Although it may look initially like understanding and it may feel like empathy, it is something quite different. What has happened is that two people have come together both looking for the same thing. Their assumption is that, since the other knows what they have been through and what they want so intimately, the other will be able to heal them and make them whole. He will satisfy their previously unmet needs. In short, the other person is there to do for them what they cannot do for themselves. With time, both come to realise that rather than mutual healing there will be an increasingly urgent battle to get their own needs met, because neither has the necessary resources to still the others old pain. The abusive partner will find some release in masking his needs by shifting blame onto the other, who will be labelled too needy and dependent. Their needs brought them together and their needs will drive them apart but only after they have undergone profound disillusionment and suffering together. Second Ring romances typify the adage: marry in haste and relent at leisure. We let the wrong person through too many boundaries, too fast, without finding out the things we really needed to know about them. The First Ring The First Ring is the domain of truly loving, nurturing relationships with a partner, close friends and family. It is the circle of congruence: peoples actions are consistent with their words. Unlike a Second Ring romance, in which one partner may protest undying love, but will, increasingly, treat the other with contempt and hostility, a First Ring partner has the personal resources to care for and treat the other as well as they treat themselves. First Ring people are not saints, but they are mature, functional human beings who are not always clamouring to get their needs met first. There would be a lot more to say about First Ring relationships, but our focus, here, is on The Second Ring because that is the ring over which we should have the greatest control, but often do not. It is also the ring where a great deal of emotional damage occurs, that we can learn to prevent. (C) Annie Kaszina 2005

Rational Thought, Environmental Ethics and EIR Lawsuit Reality Checks
By Lance Winslow Many folks believe that for mankind to handle the CO2 emissions issues that we will need a little bit of a social movement to force this to occur. And many socialists feel that anyone or individual that gets in the way of such effort should be culled and criminalized? Interesting indeed, this thought process? It is the same old game; Do as I say not as I do. Your individual perspective is fine as long as it matches mine. Personally, I have no problem exerting a little bit of "rational thought" onto the masses once in a while, as they are unwilling to think for themselves and they are liable to drive us all off a railroad bridge one day. It has been said that; Socialism is a train wreck looking for a location, by "Anonymous" for fear of castration. If society goes around and kills the 100th monkey or 1 millionth human then we should expect stagflation, inflation and collapse, ask Jered. Well I do enjoy the Global Environmental Ethics Debate although I would WARN against too much environmental controls and lawyer driven bureaucracy, due to the hindsight we have seen with EIR blockage of very good projects such as add-ons to power plants to make them cleaner and more efficient. I have seen EIR lawsuits preventing ocean wave energies from getting the land they need to put in, as well as Blockage of needed dams for water retention, hydro-electric power or barge transportation. One real problem is the environmental lawyers and fake data and lawsuits preventing upgrades, new facilities and more efficient systems. Many times the EIR lawsuits are completely bogus and NIMBY driven, by radicals; in name of and in name only of Environmentalism. How do the environmental scientists deal with such a reality check, does their research papers address the reality? You see, if we do nothing, those with no argument will have the same pain as those who had the solutions that no one would hear. I hope you might consider all this in 2007. Rewriting Your Resume? 7 Easy Ways To Give Yourself An Upgrade
By Nigel Patterson In today's competitive job market, a first class resume is an essential tool for winning an interview. The way in which you present your skills, achievements and experience on paper will profoundly affect the way in which a hiring company considers your application. An expertly crafted resume not only captures the attention of its reader through
careful attention to layout and formatting; it also targets the specific needs of the
potential employer by matching and highlighting your abilities and background to
the key requirements of the position. So what exactly is the 'perfect resume'? It's well-nigh impossible to get recruitment professionals to agree on this. For
example, take the vexed question of the 'resume objective'. Some employers prefer
to see a clearly stated objective as evidence of a candidate's career focus; others
consider including an objective to be a restrictive practice -- or worse, little more
than vague waffle. So in the pursuit of a truly personalized resume, it's hardly surprising that effective
practice differs from applicant to applicant -- and what suits one job-hunter may
not work so well for another. And while it's impossible to lay down hard and fast rules of best practice in resume
writing, it's a whole lot easier to identify some of the habits that can turn recruiters
right off -- perhaps even sabotage a candidate's chances from the start! In this article, I've collected some of these common resume blunders -- so if you're
looking to upgrade your resume, here's a checklist of seven easy ways to start! 1. Don't rely on a 'one size fits all' resume If your resume is going to get you the interviews you deserve, it needs to focus on
the particular demands of the job. So unless your field is very narrow, it's likely that
you'll need to adapt your resume to each specific application. To help you target your resume, try answering these questions:
you're thinking of applying for a job; what would the perfect applicant be like?
what are their most important characteristics?
what skills and attributes do they possess?
When you profile the 'ideal candidate' in this way, you're putting yourself in the
employer's shoes: thinking first about what matters to them and
imagining what they'll be looking for when they make a short list from all the
applications they'll receive. This is a really useful exercise to help you decide which of your own abilities and
achievements to spotlight in your resume. 2. Make sure you include complete contact information Your cover letter may get separated from the resume. Don't blithely assume that
because your address and telephone number are in the cover letter, they don't need
to be
on the resume as well -- they do! If the employer wants to get hold of you, they'll likely use the phone. So ensure that
you give a personal number (including area code) where you can be reached during
the day or where messages can be left. Include a cell phone number and e-mail
address where possible. 3. Make the resume easy to read Don't print your resume in any font size smaller than 11 pt. Be liberal with white
space and remember that bullet points in a list help a reader to absorb information. You can emphasize headers and key points by discreet use of bold type, capitals or
underlining -- but don't overdo the effect. Consider going on to a second sheet if a single page is crammed. 4. Seize the reader's interest in the first few lines If your application is one of dozens or even hundreds received, you need to capture
the attention of the reader in just a few seconds. The best way to focus interest at
the start is with a powerful objective -- or, if you prefer it, a skills summary. It's the
place to emphasize your key achievements and core expertise and identify specific
job goals. The employer wants a straight answer to the question 'What can this person do for
me?' -- so make your profile easy to read and give a clear statement of what you
can bring to the job. 5. Don't underplay your achievements and experience You've already imagined what the perfect candidate for the job would be like. So
now focus on those aspects of your own background and skill set that best illustrate
those attributes. Highlight your key accomplishments and areas of authority and, wherever possible,
use action verbs and statements that quantify what you have achieved. But don't get
creative here: make sure you give evidence for your claims. 6. Order your information according to what the reader wants to know There's no single correct order of elements in a resume. Everything depends on
what the employer or recruiter is most interested in finding out. In general, put your most relevant material first! Many recruiters like a reverse
chronological order of dates. Also be aware that some employers dislike a purely functional resume format and
feel that it glosses over gaps in work history or other shortcomings. 7. Check your spelling and grammar There's no substitute for careful proofreading of your resume. Use grammar and
spell checking software by all means, but be aware that it may not always pick up
contextual errors. Print the document and check it on paper rather than on screen. If possible, ask a
reliable friend or relative to double check for mistakes. Don't forget to check that
you have spelled names correctly. Conclusion: keep developing your resume Your resume is a powerful marketing tool. It will always be a 'work in progress',
constantly needing updates and refinements according to changing circumstances.

careful attention to layout and formatting; it also targets the specific needs of the
potential employer by matching and highlighting your abilities and background to
the key requirements of the position.
If you're planning or conducting a job search, redrafting your resume could be one
of the best investments you make towards your future career success. Nigel Patterson is a business writer and publisher of 1stClassResume.com. Visit his website for more tips and advice on effective resume writing,

Natural & Alternative Health Providers - A Case for Licensure
By Lisa Barger It's estimated that fewer than 3% of all licensed physicians practice any form of "alternative" medicine but a full 36% of Americans use some form of complimentary medicine on a regular basis, according to a 2004 study done by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine. Factor in non-medical treatments like prayer and nutritional therapies like megavitamin therapy, that number rises to 62%. Clearly, Americans are embracing "natural" and alternative medicine in record numbers. But who's providing the services? The lack of regulation, which varies widely from state to state, makes it impossible to discover how many people are practicing alternative therapies like naturopathy, herbalism and homeopathy on a professional basis. Potentially, there are thousands of minimally-trained practitioners offering medical services to patients who have no idea that their "doctor" is unlicensed and unqualified. So why is there so much debate about licensing alternative health care providers like naturopaths and herbalists? Opponents of licensing claim that such licensing would deny patients freedom of choice and put self-educated practitioners out of business. But what about the safety of their patients? Licensing will ultimate protect patients from unqualified practitioners. If you're a client of natural or alternative medicine here's what you need to know: Licensing will assure that your practitioner has adequate training. The vast majority of herbalists, homeopaths and naturopaths operating in this country are self-taught and have no clinical experience before they're granted their diplomas. Even worse is the fact that many have never even met their instructors or mentors because they "earned" their diplomas through online diploma mills. Licensing alternative practitioners will assure that your provider has hands-on training and hasn't simply taken a 6-week online "course". Licensing will ultimately protect you in the case of malpractice. As troubling as it is to think that most practitioners are self-trained, it's perhaps even more worrisome that most don't have any type of malpractice insurance. Unlike mainstream physicians, who typically are well-insured against malpractice claims, unlicensed naturopaths and herbalists usually can't qualify for malpractice coverage, mainly because of their lack of legitimate medical training. In the event of an injury, a patient may have little opportunity to recover monetary damages. Licensing would require proof of competency. When you walk into an attorney's office, a car repair shop or a day care, you have at least some assurance that the person you're about to hire has both experience and training. But when you sit down with an alternative health care provider, you've no way of knowing if that person is a legitimate practitioner or the product of a brief internet "class". Licensing natural and alternative providers would require proof of training through an accredited program. Proof of competency won't turn a bad herbalist into a good one but it will prove that he or she at least completed the program. Licensure will ultimately protect the practitioner, too. The lack of consistent regulation in many states (and the complete absence of legislation in others) forces many alternative health care providers to work in a legal "gray area". Licensing would clearly define what an alternative provider could and couldn't do, ultimately protecting him from charges of practicing medicine without a license. Regardless of where you stand of the issue of licensure for natural and alternative health care providers, it's important to remember that, ultimately, it's all about patient safety. Assuring that our clients get quality health care information should be a top priority for anyone working in this field. Acid Reflux Disease And Cancer
By Charles Richey Could A Supplement called MSM Be The Answer? Acid reflux or gerd (gastroesophageal reflux disease) is a condition in which fluid splashes up from the stomach into the esophagus. This fluid contains mostly acid with some pepsin and bile. All three of these fluids are potentially dangerous to the sensitive esophageal tissue, with acid being the most harmful. This refluxed fluid can inflame and damage the lining of the esophagus (esophagitis). If this condition is allowed to become chronic, it can in time develop into Barretts esophagus, which is the precursor of esophageal cancer. Up to 15 million Americans experience acid reflux daily. People at all ages are susceptible to this condition. Older people who suffer from acid reflux tend to be more seriously affected than younger people. 13,000 people are diagnosed with esophageal cancer each year. At least 12,000 people die from it. The overall survival rate is very poor. Acid reflux is the greatest known risk factor for developing Barretts Esophagus, which can become esophageal cancer. Barretts esophagus occurs when chronic acid reflux or esophagitis is not controlled. Through constant inflammation and damage, the normal cells that line the esophagus called squamous cells turn into specialized columnar cells. Columnar cells are not normally found in human beings and can become cancerous. Although this can happen to anyone, it usually occurs in people over forty who have had regular bouts of heartburn for more than five years. Some of the symptoms are difficulty in swallowing and being awakened in the night by the pain of heartburn. Some people have no symptoms at all. Scar tissue can develop from the constant attack of acid on the tender lining of the esophagus. The tissue can become thickened and hard, making the esophagus narrower. This can make it difficult to swallow food or even water. I am a firm believer in natural cures versus conventional medicine. When I go to a doctor it is for diagnostic purposes only. Then, instead of subjecting myself to a barrage of harmful pills and painful procedures, I attempt to cure the condition myself by using alternative methods. I have found that MSM (methylsulfonylmethane) has the ability to soften scar tissue, making it flexible and permeable. I believe that by taking MSM on a regular basis, one can possibly avoid the severe problems associated with chronic acid reflux. MSM has been touted as the greatest natural healing agent since vitamin C. It seems to have the power to reduce pain and inflammation. It is currently being used to treat a wide range of ailments including, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis and gout. Its even being used as a treatment for snoring and constipation. MSM has been used with great success on horses and dogs, to control the inflammation associated with allergies. I use MSM to relieve the summer allergies of my twelve year old Jack Russell Terrier, Jack Pot. It works like magic. By giving him a gram of MSM in a little cheese twice a day, I have reduced his itching and running eyes, which are associated with air born allergies, to a bare minimum. I also use MSM drops for my eyes. It evidently has the power to reduce, if not prevent, cataracts. It seems to dissolve them. My mother had cataracts in both eyes. She had one removed by her ophthalmologist. When she told me what she had one, I put her on MSM drops immediately. When she went back to the doctor for her pre-surgery exam for the second eye, they discovered that the other cataract had completely disappeared. Arent cataracts a form of scar tissue? I believe that scar tissue and Barretts Esophagus have an important connection. Therefore, if MSM does, in fact, have this beneficial effect on scar tissue, perhaps it can prevent, or at least improve Barretts esophagus. Maybe MSM can help prevent this kind of cancer? I dont know, but I will continue to take it rather than to subject myself to so called modern medicine. If you should choose to go the allopathic medical route, diagnosis of Barretts Esophagus involves an endoscopy. The doctor sticks a long mechanical tube down your throat to observe the esophagus and perform a biopsy. It cant be a very pleasant procedure. And what if the results are negative? The doctor will most likely prescribe drugs which have harmful side effects. Some of these drugs include H2 blockers like cimetidine, ranitidine, and famotidine. Or he may prescribe the drugs omeprazole and lansoprazole, which are proton pump inhibitors. Some of he side effects of these drugs are: headache, disturbances of the gut such as diarrhea, constipation, nausea, vomiting or abdominal pain, excess gas in the stomach and intestines (flatulence), dry mouth, skin reactions such as rash and itch, inflammation of the skin (dermatitis), dizziness, pain in the muscles and joints, swelling of the legs and ankles due to excess fluid retention (peripheral edema), pins and needles (paraesthesia), depression, agitation, confusion, difficulty sleeping (insomnia), sleepiness (somnolence), liver or blood disorders. The list goes on and on. If the drugs dont work then hell most likely suggest a surgical procedure called fundoplication, which entails removing the damaged part of the esophagus and attaching the remaining section to the stomach. For myself, I will continue to search for and experiment with natural cures for acid reflux. I think that perhaps the medical approach could be worse than the disease itself. I was a victim of acid reflux for many years. I had disappointing experiences with doctors, who knew nothing about nutrition or alternative medicine. Basically, doctors only know how to write prescriptions. They know nothing about healing. They are only taught how to treat symptoms by dealing drugs that support the pharmaceutical industry. The Proton pump inhibitors, which my doctor prescribed, ultimately didnt work for me. Besides the harmful side effects caused by these drugs, no one really know what the long tern affect of them is on the human body. Since conventional medicine didnt help me, I was highly motivated to explore alternative means of healing myself. After much research and experimentation, I did find natural ways which allowed me to ultimately cure my acid reflux condition. MSM was one of them. Besides being a writer, he is also well known as an actor, musician and published composer of music under the nom d plume, Jeremy Wind. He is also an ardent naturalist. Mr. Richey is a self-educated expert on how to cure acid reflux disease, by natural means and has written an extensive report entitled, REFLUX GONE FOREVER, Natural Acid Reflux Remedies. He explains how the proper application of herbs, health store items, meditation, diet and exercise can heal acid reflux, gerd and heartburn, without the use of drugs. Diet Fads Come And Go
By Tracie Johanson Cursed by dieters everywhere, and loved by children around the world, sugar is one those substances we 'love to hate' and 'hate to love'! It can make bland foods tasty and can make the dentist rich. Americans love sugar in all forms, from pure white granulated to liquid to fluffy cotton candy. As a nation, it's fair to say that we've developed a love affair with sugar! But at what cost? Our ever-expanding waistlines are due, in part, to our sugar infatuation. Many of us try to eat healthier, only to be pushed into consuming even more sugar! Take for example the low-fat craze of the 1980's and '90's, pushed by the federal government's proclomation that FAT IS BAD. As soon as Americans started demanding low-fat products, the food manufacturers responded by flooding the market with low-fat, high-sugar foods.....and we loved it. Honestly, how many of us have chowed down an entire box of Hot Tamales candy and justified it because they're 'fat-free'? Cotton candy, that staple of the county fair, is also fat-free! Hard candy, jelly beans, licorice and oh so many more foods found their way into our mouths - all justified because of their fat-free status. But at what cost? Common sense, reinforced by our expanding size, soon reminded us that it's EXCESS CALORIES THAT MAKE US FAT, and that SUGAR HAS CALORIES! It took us only a decade or so to figure out that just because a food is fat-free, doesn't mean that it's good for us! Again, the food industry responded (and is still responding) by giving us loads and loads of sugar-free food. From ice cream to candy to soda, sugar-free is fast replacing fat-free as the new standard of 'healthy'. Our scientists have created many different sugar substitutes for us to enjoy: DiabetiSweet, Splenda, Equal, Sucralose, Xylitol, Stevia, NutraSweet, aspartame, tagatose, saccharin, and many many more. Even the Pepsi Slushie, that icon from our youth, now has a sugar-free version! But at what cost? Do we really know everything we need to know about the sugar replacements on the market today? Take saccharin for example. Saccharin has been used to sweeten foods and beverages without calories or carbohydrates for over a century. Its use was considerable during the sugar shortages of the two world wars, particularly in Europe. Later, however, we find some experts debating the safety of saccharin: "In a joint letter, the scientists told the National Toxicology Program, a division of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, that declaring saccharin safe would 'result in greater exposure to this probable carcinogen in tens of millions of people, including children (indeed, fetuses). If saccharin is even a weak carcinogen, this unnecessary additive would pose an intolerable risk to the public.'". (Source: www.cspinet.org) Now, citing new research, some scientists are claiming that sugar-free foods may not help us lose weight! As with many topics, the experts don't agree on this issue. What's important to note, however, is that some doctors believe that the sugar-free craze might be just a bad case of deja vu similar to the fat-free craze of decades past. So, when the year 2030 rolls around, will we all be looking back in disbelief wondering how in the heck we ever believed in that sugar-free nonsense? Only time will tell. In the meantime, we need to know that BALANCE IS THE KEY to everything. Balance a healthy diet (eating foods in moderation) with a regular exercise program. Let the experts debate all day long about what to eat and what not to eat.....while they're trying to figure out the 'magic formula' for the perfect diet, we'll be maintaining a healthy weight through exercise!! * Copyright 2005 Pick Up The Pace. How to Get Your Real Estate Website Ranked Higher in Search Engines
By Brett Miller Search engine optimization is a great tool to ensure that your website reaches the largest number of viewers. Simply put, search engine optimization for real estate would involve choosing a keyword or words and using them frequently on your website. Choosing the Right Keywords - Be Specific! It is important to choose a keyword that your clients would be likely to type in to a search engine, and narrowing down your target audience is quite important. If, for example, you work in the Denver area, choosing "Denver Real Estate" as your search engine optimization phrase would probably be too general. Many agents are probably using the same technique. You might want to narrow your key phrase to a particular neighborhood or even street. Find a specialized area within your work area that you have a special connection to. Maybe you sell a lot of lakefront property, particularly in the Edgewater area, so selecting a key phrase such as "Edgewater Lakefront Home" would help narrow your target audience. Using Search Engine Optimization to Target Leads Once you've analyzed your target market, it's time to get that copy up on your website. Use your key phrase as often as you can! Example: Buying your new Edgewater lakefront home is easy with Sally Smith! Sally sells more Edgewater lakefront homes than any other agent in town. See why buying an Edgewater lakefront home is a great investment, as well as a wonderful way of life! Call Sally today to see which Edgewater lakefront home would be the best fit for your family. Edgewater lakefront homes are selling quickly, so don't wait! Makes Sure Your Website is Informative - Content is King Don't be afraid to use your keyword or words multiple times. It may seem too repetitive, but your goal is to capture the attention of potential clients. Make the rest of your website interestingly written and informative and your new clients will never know that you used search engine optimization to bring them to your site! Don't be afraid to create different pages for each neighborhood or area that you service. Your new buyers and sellers will simply assume that you knew exactly what they were looking for! Polygraph Use for Child Sexual Abusers
By Neil Rucker The use of polygraph as a means of deterring convicted child sexual offenders from re-offending, has been used in several states in the United States since the mid 1980s. Over the years it has become more widely used in most states of the United States at the present time. However, some jurisdictions are hung up about using this unique tool because of their preconceived ideas about polygraph. Recently the use of polygraph for child sexual offenders has been studied in Great Britain and was found to be very effective both in the deterrence and education about what makes a child sexual offender tick. Polygraph is now used in Great Britain for child sexual offenders. There are however, detractors who say that it is not effective. Usually these detractors are so called professionals who have never been actively involved in one of these programs. Anyone (even the professional who went in with a preconceived mind) who has ever participated in such a program, quickly comes to realize, that polygraph is very effective in maintaining compliance. The child sexual offender is a unique individual. These people do not look any different than the rest of the population and may not exhibit outwardly in public anything that would give away their perverted view of sex. They very diligently at not letting people know of their proclivity for children. They even seem to have a more intense fear of detection than the so called normal population. Since fear of detection and not ones ability to lie is what polygraph is based upon, it seems to work better with this segment of the population. Even if a judge or prosecutor who is convinced polygraph does not work, should closely examine the jurisdictions that are using polygraph in this area and see if the programs are working. Every court in the United States should at least investigate the use of polygraph as a means of keeping child sexual offenders in check and helping to protect our greatest natural resource from these fiends. Many courts will agree that polygraph works but say they cant afford such a program. Most of these offenders are not indigent and can pay their own way for the testing. The ones that are truly indigent will have to receive free testing. Most polygraph examiners realize this and will work with the court system to provide for this small segment of offenders. Most every jurisdiction in the country has a program similar to this for DUI offenders and other traffic offences. Do they think the sexual abuse of children is less important than a speeder? For more information on polygraph and how to protect our children from sexual offenders go to www.alabamapolygraph.com. Edgeworthia Chrysantha
By Geoff Bryant
Although it is a member of the Thymelaeaceae, the family that includes the daphnes, it would be hard to imagine a plant less like a daphne at first glance. However, if you are familiar with the deciduous Daphne genkwa, there is some hint of resemblance there.
The genus comprises three very similar species from China and Japan. It is named after Michael Pakenham Edgeworth (1812-81), a part-time botanist, plant collector and employee of the East India Company.
The plant grown in our gardens and sold in garden centres is commonly labelled E. papyrifera, which is actually a different species. There is some confusion over this, even among botanists. Apparently E. papyrifera has white flowers, not the yellow of E. chrysantha, though some botanists regard them variations of one species.
Edgeworthia chrysantha is a heavily-wooded deciduous shrub. It grows to around 1.2-1.8m high by 1.5m wide. Its 12.5-17.5cm long, pointed oval leaves are soft green with prominent midribs and felted when young.
The foliage is attractive, especially when young, but this is a plant grown for its flowers. They are bright yellow aging to creamy white, tubular and about 1 cm long. Individually they are nothing much, but they are densely packed in 8cm diameter globose heads. The are very fragrant and open until late winter from buds that have been obvious from late autumn.
The flowers are followed by dry, purplish-green berries known technically as drupes.
This is an often underrated shrub and I'd be the first to admit that it is not always instantly appealing. At first, its rather sparse growth and very heavy branches can seem grotesque. But with time these things tend to be overlooked in favour of the delicate colouring and fragrance of the flowers, and the beauty of the new foliage.
A moist, well-drained, humus-enriched soil with partial shade is best - the sort of conditions you would give your rhododendrons and camellias, or for that matter your daphnes. It is hardy to around -15C and thrives in a cool temperate climate.Propagate by semi-ripe cuttings, aerial layers or seed.
Try Edgeworthia, it's not difficult to grow and although bare for much of the year it has its moment of glory when flowering, and definitely has that 'weird' appeal that makes it one for the collector. And one of the features that you are fond of changing every now and then is your phones ringtone. Whether you have that standard phone ring or you have the latest Crazy Frog dance mania, ringtones are one of the features important on your phone. It is a sound that reminds you of an incoming call or voice message. All ringtones on cellular phone models manufactured nowadays can now be customized. Here are some of the ways of how you can customize your cellular phone ringtone: You can set a specific ringtone for an individual caller. For instance, you can assign a separate ringtone if your friends are calling to you as well as assigning different ringtone when your family calls you. You can create your own ringtone. Just utilize the melody composer of your cellular phone and learn the notes that correspond to the keys of the ringtone you want to compose. There are other cellular phones that can edit downloadable ringtones or tones that came from either the Internet or database of your cellular network provider. However, only a handful of cellular phone units have this customize function. Ringtones are available on two sources: the pre-installed ringtone stored on your phone and the downloadable ringtone which, as mentioned earlier, can be transferred to your phone via Internet or your local cellular network provider. Cellular phone ringtones comes in three distinctive types. These are the following: 1. Monophonic ringtone, or also known as monotone; is the simplest type of ringtone that is compatible on all cellular phones that are manufactured today. It is made up of series of subsequent beep set at different frequencies. 2. Polyphonic ringtone, or also known as polytone, has the capability of producing 16 distinctive sounds at once, thus creating a harmonic melody. The latest models of cellular phone support this type of ringtone. 3. True tones, or also known as MP3 tones, are the newest genre of ringtones today. It bears the exact instrument sound and real voices of the singers just like what you hear on your radio or on your iPod. Furthermore, it not only features the songs of today but you can get the songs of yesterday as well for your cellular phone. This type of ringtone is only available to the latest models of cellular phones. The demand for cellular phone ringtones is really increasing on a rapid rate merely because the majority of cellular phone users nowadays are young people. Internet and other avenues for acquiring ringtones for cellular phones are really making a hit in the ringtone industry. Ringtone, aside from giving you the cue for an incoming call or message, is also your phones identity and signifies your interest in life. Whether you are a conservative or a funky type of individual, ringtones is there to complete your cellular phone experience. Explore and be happy. MIT Technology Review Concern Over WARF Patent Royalty Demand To CIRM Over Stem Cells Is Misguided
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Lawrence_Ebert] Lawrence Ebert On April 24, an article in the MIT Technology Review portrayed the immediate concern over the Wisconsin/WARF/Thomson patents on stem cells as how the patents will affect basic academic research, which, in turn, could affect the development of stem cell-based tools and therapies. The article mentioned a possible gambit by the state of California to ensure cooperation among researchers of different states. The oversight committee of California's CIRM recently announced that any California researchers who develop patented discoveries using California state funds must share their patents with other state researchers. Ed Penhoet of CIRM was quoted: "We hope WARF will reciprocate." Of course, one issue is that WARF presently has patents related to embyronic stem cells, and CIRM does not. Further, one would need to know details of what is shared. Does the sharing only pertain to the use by researchers in academic institutions, or does it extend to companies created by such researchers? One of the prime selling points to voters of states such as California and New Jersey was that the state funding research would recover expended money through patent royalties. If everyone gets a free license, such a recovery is unlikely to happen. The article goes through the world of patent useage as among different patent-holding universities. Universities generally allow other institutions to use patented technologies without special permission. The litigated case of Madey v. Duke University is an exception to this general rule, although it was a patent-holding professor who sued a university. Furthermore, WARF requires universities to get a license to do embryonic stem cell research. "None of us understand why we need a license...Why is this technology any different?" says one technology-transfer official. The license of WARF to the University of California, for example, permits scientists to use only a small number of embryonic stem cell lines. And the license granted to the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, a nonprofit medical research organization that funds scientists across the nation, prohibits scientists from accepting funding from or collaborating with commercial companies unless the company has a commercial license from WARF. The article presents an interesting quote by Jeanne Loring, who herself is an author of an article criticizing the WARF patent royalty demand [311 Science 1716 (2006)]: Jeanne Loring, a scientist at the Burnham Institute for Medical Research in La Jolla, CA, started a short-lived embryonic stem cell company several years ago. "I learned from venture capital investors that these patents existed and that it would be impossible to obtain funding from them," she says. This quote is significant for at least two reasons. First, one sees that venture capitalists were aware of the Thomson/WARF patents and saw them as a show-stopper as to VC investment in the field. Thus, as to small research entities spurning money from CIRM over disputes about patent royalty rights, one suspects such small entities do NOT have VC funding as a viable alternative. I suspect the length of time before payout is separately a showstopper as to VC funding; nothing here looks ready for commercialization within seven years, a typical VC benchmark. Second, in the world of Bayh-Dole, it's kind of scary that one professor/entrepreneur would not know of relevant patents of a Bayh-Dole grantee. Further, it's also scary that CIRM apparently had not anticipated the WARF play, which failure is somewhat hard to fathom since the basic patent issued years ago. The basic WARF/Thomson patent is US 5,843,780 (issued 1 Dec 1998 to James A. Thomson, based on application 591246 filed 18 Jan 1996; the application was a continuation-in-part of U.S. application Ser. No. 08/376,327 filed Jan. 20, 1995. It was obtained with funding from the federal NIH, and thus represents a patent obtainted through the auspices of the Bayh-Dole Act. It is separately true that Thomson, a few days after filing his basic patent application, submitted a paper to the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, which appeared as 92 PNAS 7844 (1995). His effort at patenting did not impede his efforts at rapid public disclosure. Kenneth Taymor, an attorney with the Stanford Program on Stem Cells in Society, is quoted in the article: "The more that WARF presses its rights, the more research will be impinged and the more likely it will move offshore." This boogeyman won't hunt. In a different variant, research was going to move offshore after Bush's restriction in 2001. Taymor and the article author Emily Singer simply neglect to mention the role that 35 USC 271(e)(1) is going to play in research on embryonic stem cells. Therapies arising from embryonic stem cells are going to need FDA approval. Work done to meet FDA requirements is insulated from infringement liability through the safe harbor of 271(e)(1), as expansively interpreted by the U.S. Supreme Court in the case Merck v. Integra. Issues discussed in the present article are related to those mentioned in Ebert, Lawrence. (2006, April 13). Will Wisconsin's Patents Block Embryonic Stem Cell Research?. EzineArticles. Can You Really Get A Free Prepaid Cell Phone Card
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Lewis_Leake]Lewis Leake Can you really get a free prepaid cell phone card? A friend of mine asked me this question just a few days ago. My first reaction was to say no you can't. Why would a company want to do that? Then I thought about it some and came to the conclusion that I would research this question and find out. So naturally I went to Google. I typed "free prepaid cell phone card" in the search box and clicked on Go. Was I ever surprised when the answer screen appeared with hundreds of search results. Maybe my first impression was wrong! So I clicked on a couple of the search results but didn't find any mention of free prepaid cell phone cards. There was plenty of mention about cell phone cards but I had to buy these. Nothing for free here. I finally found one that looked promising but after filling out a screen with a lot of personal information they then asked for my credit card information. Okay, that's it; I'm out of here. I found another one that wanted me to fill out one of those endless surveys. You know the kind where you aren't getting out of here with anything free until you buy something Then I found a website that would give me a free one if I bought one. I could get a free $5 card if I bought a $50 card. That might have been a good deal if I was actually looking to buy a prepaid phone card. After an hour or so I finally gave up! My conclusion is this. You might actually find a free prepaid cell phone card if you look really hard. But is it really worth it if you have to spend hours to get a free $5 prepaid phone card? Find out where to get the best deals on [http://www.factguide.info/cell-phones/Articles/Cell_Phone_Plans.php]cell phone plans. Marketing On-site Car Wash Services to Business Customers
By Lance Winslow If you own a mobile car washing or auto detailing company you know that some of your best clients will be corporate clients and you also know that when you are in the parking lot cleaning, washing or detailing cars that other employees will hire you. In fact often you will literally stuck in the parking lot all day cleaning and detailing cars. Obviously you could have worse problems. Since the gasoline prices are so high it behooves you to stay in one place all day and make money rather than driving around burning up fuel and costs, which are unnecessary you see? But how do you get Corporate Clients like this? Well simple really schedule a meeting with the human resource director and tell them you will come one time per week to the corner of their parking lot to wash cars for interested employees. They will see this as an incentive and value added service for their employees. Tell the human resource director that you will block off the storm drains and not pollute run off wash water and explain how you do this. Also tell them you will have a collection box upfront in the company where employees can put their money in pre-printed envelopes with their keys so you will not disturb the companys productivity. As long as you always show up on time, do good work and are honest in your dealings you will have these accounts for years. Consider this in 2006. "Lance Winslow" - Online Think Tank forum board. Why You Need Birds in Your Garden
By Andrew M. Lawrence Garden birds are not just about looking nice while hanging from your bird feeders, they actually provide a vital role. If you are a keen gardener then you may already have bird feeders in your garden to attract your local bird-life, but if you dont here are some good reasons why you should. If you are a keen rose grower or maybe enjoy the produce of your vegetable plot then you will know how difficult it is to keep away the pests. You can be sure that whatever is your favourite plant in your garden there is a bug or beetle around making life difficult. You could use pesticides and chemicals to rid you of these pests but I think we are all aware of the ecological effects of chemicals in our environment and especially if you are growing veg or fruit you will want them as natural as possible to get that home grown taste. By now you will have probably worked out where Im going with this, its easy to take garden birds for granted but if you can make your garden a comfortable place for them to be, to feed, to rest and to play they will pay you back by eating every bug and beetle they can find. Now you may think that if you use bird feeders they will ignore the natural food and keep to the nuts and suet, but you would be surprised, once you have created a haven for your garden birds they will be spending a good deal of time there and that includes hopping about and doing bird type things, which includes hunting for bugs amongst the beds and bushes, its their natural behaviour and so the more birds you have in your garden the more effective they will be at keeping the pests down. Other Useful Jobs
Its not just pest control that the local bird life are skilled at, there are plenty of other jobs they will do for you while they are in your garden. Im sure at some stage you will have seen a finch hopping about on your lawn pecking at the ground and rooting for worms, a big garden worm is a tasty meal for birds and they are always keen to find them, well, once again they are helping us out, by pecking and rooting around on the grass they are aerating the top surface of the grass which will aid growth of your lawn and help it remain healthy and green. The next job your garden birds will help you with is re-seeding of plants, this may not be an exact science but if you are a fan of a natural garden then they will be a useful and completely natural way of distributing the seeds of your favourite plants around the garden at just the right time of year, if can be a great surprise when you see where it turns up next year. This works when the birds are eating the berries and seed pods of the plants in your garden. They arent the most careful of eaters and will clean themselves after a meal, when they do this they wipe their beak on a branch allowing the left over seeds to fall back to the earth and re-seed. The other natural method of seed distribution happens when they finally go to the toilet, not all the seeds will have been digested and the bird deposit will provide perfect nutrients to get the seeds off to a great start in the soil where they fell. So you get all these jobs done for you by simply inviting your local neighbourhood birds into your garden. So get those bird feeders up, make or buy a bird bath for them and help them to help you this year in your garden, they will thank you for it!
